My Grandma
Despite living in the states for over 20 years, my grandma only knows a few words in English. Still, my grandma thrives in America and gets involved in her community. In our neighborhood, many residents speak my grandma’s native language and the local stores sell traditional food and items from our culture. My grandma has found a community that embraces her customs and provides a safe space for immigrants like her. Constantly being surrounded by my family’s culture in my neighborhood, I never felt the fear of possibly losing that connection. And, when I am not in my neighborhood, I am given the opportunity to experience the other rich cultures that flourish in New York City. Growing up in such a diverse city, I am grateful that I have been able to stay connected to my heritage as well as appreciate the other cultures that surround me.
